Nein, da haben wir kein Y vergessen. Kane West heißt tatsächlich Kane West. Damit hätten wir auch geklärt, wer den besten Künstlernamen im ganzen Programm, ach was, der ganzen Saison hat. Der Londoner Produzent und DJ ist Teil der PC Music-Clique, die derzeit die Pop-Welt mit digitalen Niedlichkeiten und rauschhaft überdrehten Plastik-Hyper-Trance-Beats überschüttet. Sie merken schon: Es ist alles schwer in Worte zu fassen. Auf Kane Wests aktuellem Album, »Western Beats«, sorgen allerdings noch Einschübe von House, Electro und UK Funky für etwas Bodenhaftung für den Ohrenschmalz. Sagen wir: Das Ergebnis ist das Audioäquivalent zu einem Regenbogenstroboskop.

Wie entspannt Ólafur Arnalds und Janus Rasmussen ihr gemeinsames Kind angehen, unterstreicht wohl nichts besser, als der Fakt, dass sie ganze fünf Jahre mit den Arbeiten an ihrem ersten Album gewartet haben, bevor dieses dann 2014 auf dem feinsinnigen Erased Tapes-Label erschien. Arnalds, mehrfach ausgezeichneter und international gefeierter »Erneuerer« der klassischen Musik, und Rasmussen, Kopf der Pop-Band Bloodgroup, haben im isländischen Reykjavík ihre Studios im gleichen Haus. Immer, wenn es die Zeit erlaubte, probierten sich die beiden Freunde durch Arnalds stetig wachsenden Synthesizer-Park. Herausgekommen ist eine texturenreiche Techno- Erzählung, wie man sie selbst von zwei solchen Talenten nicht unbedingt erwartet hätte.

James Murphy mag sich zurückgezogen haben, DFA Records lebt weiter! Dank Leuten wie Juan MacLean. Murphy war in den 90ern einst Tontechniker von MacLean, als dieser noch nicht die Clubs mit seinem kühl-eleganten Disco-Sound ins Schwitzen brachte.

Anika & T.Raumschmiere / 21.00 – 21.40 / Berghain

Uraufführung

Sie ist das schlaue Multitalent, das als Musikerin nicht nur ein N und den Nachnamen beiseite lässt, sondern auch jene Musik, die die Leute »Krautrock« nennen, zum Geistertanz mit dem Dub bittet, weshalb ihr nicht nur das Label Stones Throw und Geoff Barrows Invada Records zu Füßen liegen. Er ist als legendäre Electro-Punk-Frontfigur und Gründer von Shitkatapult einer der über die Jahre hinweg umtriebigsten Köpfe der Berliner Szene. Einander gemein haben Annika Henderson alias Anika und Marco Haas, besser bekannt als T.Raumschmiere, ihre Vorliebe für persönliche Offenbarungen und warme, hypnotische Beats, die einen alles vergessen lassen. Nachdem sie für Haas' neues Album erstmals zusammengearbeitet haben, finden die beiden bei »Pop-Kultur« nun in einer Weltpremiere auf der Bühne zusammen.
 

Evvol / 20.00 – 20.40 / Berghain
Liebe auf Umwegen: Hinter Evvol stecken die Irin Julie Chance und die Australierin Jon Dark. Kennengelernt hat man sich in Paris, seit einiger Zeit residiert man in Berlin. Bekannt geworden als Kool Thing, führt das Duo sein musikalisches Schattenspiel auch auf seinem zweiten Album »Eternalism« gekonnt fort. Es knistert vor Spannung in in den minimalistischen Bauten, durch die der Hauch ihrer Stimmen weht und einen in die Nacht hinein lockt. Die internationale Musikpresse – vom Guardian, über Fader bis hin zu SPEX – hat längst angebissen.

Ganz ohne »The« legt Juan MacLean während des Festivals noch einmal solo und im Anschluss an den Berghain-Auftritt seiner Band auf. Der ehemalige Hardcore-Gitarrist ist ein brillianter House-DJ. Das hat er nicht nur mit seinem zeitlosen Mix für die renommierte »DJ-Kicks«-Reihe unter Beweis gestellt. La grande finale des zweiten »Pop-Kultur«-Tages.
Daniel Miller (DJ-Set) / 01.20 – 02.40 / Panorama Bar
Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yazoo, Goldfrapp, Erasure, Moby, Fad Gadget, Richie Hawtin… Es ist eine schier endlose Liste an Namen mit denen Daniel Miller und sein Label Mute seit 1978 die Musikwelt bereichert und verändert haben. Aktuell finden sich Apparat, Arca und Zola Jesus im Mute-Register. Miller hat also viel zu erzählen und tut dies stets auf hochgradig unterhaltsame Weise. Seit er zudem vor fünf Jahren von Sandwell District wieder an das DJ-Pult gelockt wurde, bescherte er dem Berghain bereits das eine oder andere wuchtige Set. »Pop-Kultur« markiert wiederum sein gespannt zu erwartendes Panorama-Bar-Debüt.

Was soll man von einem erwarten, der Merrill Garbus in ihrem wahnwitzigen Projekt Tune-Yards mit Bass und Tat zur Seite steht? Einer, der in der nicht gerade Gottes gesegneten Sonderlingstadt Oakland lebt? Alles andere als Kaffeehausmusik jedenfalls! Nate Brenner geht solo als Naytronix steil – und auf große Reise. Beim legendären Berliner Label City Slang, wo man zuletzt den Groove neu für sich entdeckt hat, freut man sich demnächst auf sein zweites Album. »Get down with yr sad self« (sic) – manchmal sagen Facebook-Bios schon alles. Die Atlantikküsten-Winter im kanadischen Halifax sind rau und kalt, sehr kalt. Vielleicht ist so diese süße Melancholie zu erklären, die alle Lieder von Tynan Dunfield und Babette Hayward durchzieht. Und wohl auch, warum man sich erst einmal über Monate hinweg nur via E-mail austauschte, bevor man die so entstandenen Demos auch gemeinsam aufnahm. Die Musik der Vogue Dots legt sich wie ein flauschiger Mantel um zitternde Schultern, nur das kratzende Synthetik-Etikett erinnert einen daran, sich nicht allzu sehr in Sicherheit zu wiegen, wenn Vogue Dots während »Pop-Kultur« erstmals live in Deutschland auftreten. Der nächste kanadische Exportschlager!

Normal Echo? Normal minimalism! Dawid Szczesny hat sein neues Album, »Accidental Forver«, nahezu ausschließlich auf einem Korg M1, einem instrumentgewordenen Fundament des 80er-Jahre-Synthie-Pops, eingespielt. Der vor nunmehr fünf Jahren in Berlin gestrandete polnische Experimental-Elektroniker schickt damit den zwei Alben seiner ehemaligen Coldwave-Band Niwea bereits sein zweites Soloalbum hinterher. »Accidental Forver« zieht eine dicke Sonnenuntergangs-Patina über die Welt und erscheint im Sommer auf dem neuen Berliner Auskenner-Label Mansions and Millions. Die Live-Premiere des Albums findet wiederum bei »Pop-Kultur« statt.

No, we didn’t forget the »Y«. Kane West is really called Kane West. That also clarifies who’s got the best stage name in the program – Ah, what the heck: in the whole season. The London based producer and DJ is part of the PC Music-clique, that is currently showering the pop world with digital cuteness and ecstatic keyed up plastic-hyper-trance beats. You do notice: It’s hard to put into words. On Kane West’s new album though, insertions of house, electro and UK funky provide a certain traction. Let’s say: the result is the audio equivalent to a rainbow stroboscope.

Kiasmos / 23 – 00.00 / Berghain

One can tell how relaxed Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen are about their new baby by looking at how long they took to make it. They spent five whole years working on their first joint album before it was released on Erased Tapes in 2014. Arnalds, award winning and internationally praised »innovator« of classical music and Rasmussen, frontman of the pop-band Bloodgroup, have their studios at the same house in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. Whenever their schedules allowed it, they tried out Arnalds constantly growing synthesizer-park. The result is a techno-narrative full of textures, that couldn’t even be expected from two talents like these.

James Murphy might have retired from LCD Soundsystem, but DFA Records lives on! Thanks to the likes of Juan MacLean. In the 90’s Murphy used to be MacLean’s sound engineer, long before the latter made whole clubs sweat with his cool and elegant disco sound. Today, we have witnessed copious singles, remixes and three TJM-albums, that taught the world how to dance. Of late the versatile MacLean is supported, on stage and in the studio, by another DFA-great: Nancy Whang.

She is the smart all-rounder, who as a musician does without her last name as well as an »N«, makes the music people call »Krautrock« do a ghost dance with dub, and has not only Stones Throw Records and Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records at her feet. He is  a legendary electro punk performer and boss of Shitkatapult records, which makes him one of the most bustling figures of Berlin’s music scene over the years. Annika Henderson alias Anika and Marco Haas, better known as T.Raumschmiere, share a common tendency towards navel-gazing and warm hypnotic beats to lose your mind to. After collaborating for Haas' new album the two will perform together for the first time live at »Pop-Kultur«.

Love took a detour: Evvol are Julie Chance from Ireland and Jon Dark from Australia. They met in Paris and are currently based in Berlin. They became known as Kool Thing and now continue their musical shadow play on their second album »Eternalism«. You can feel the tension in their minimalist builds. Their voices breathe right through them and lure you into the night. The international music press – from the Guardian, to Fader and SPEX – is already hooked.

Minus »The«, Juan MacLean is going to play some records after his bands Berghain-gig. The former hardcore-guitar-player is a brilliant house DJ. His timeless mix for the acclaimed »DJ-Kicks«-Series is proof of that. He brings us grand final of the second »Pop-Kultur«- Day.

Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yazoo, Goldfrapp, Erasure, Moby, Fad Gadget, Richie Hawtin… It’s a sheer endless list of names that compile the many acts Daniel Miller and his label Mute brought into the music world since 1978, and thus made it a better place. Currently we can find acts such as Apparat, Arca and Zola Jesus in the Mute roster. Evidently, Miller has a lot to say and does so in a highly entertaining manner. Since he was brought back to the turntables five years ago, by Sandwell District, he gave the Berghain a couple of memorable sets. »Pop-Kultur« marks his greatly anticipated debut in the Panorama Bar.

Normal Echo? Normal minimalism! Dawid Szczesny recorded his new album »Accidental Forever« almost only by using a Korg M1, basically the fundament of 80’s-synth-pop. Stranded in Berlin for five years now, the Polish electronic experimental musician releases his second solo album to follow up the two records he created with his former cold wave-outfit Niwea. »Accidental Forever« is bathed in sundown-patina and will be published on the Berlin based label Mansions and Millions. The »Pop-Kultur«-audience will witness the live premiere of the album.
